9 Foods Toxic to Cats and Dogs
Several foods that are safe for human consumption can be toxic to canines and felines. These foods can make your lovable pet seriously sick, or at the very least, cause inconvenient side effects. Being aware of toxic foods can help you protect your pet’s health by keeping their paws away from them or accidentally feeding them things you shouldn’t. Here are some of the toxic foods for pets you should never feed dogs and cats. 1. Chocolate Chocolate is one of the main toxic foods for dogs and cats. It contains two compounds, namely theobromine and caffeine, which are not good for your pet’s health. When ingested by pets, symptoms of poisoning such as vomiting and diarrhea can occur between 4 to 24 hours. 2. Onions, garlic, and chives These vegetables and herbs are toxic foods for dogs and cats and can result in serious illness when ingested. These items can cause gastrointestinal irritation and potentially lead to red blood cell damage and anemia. 3. Grapes and raisins Improper digestion of grapes and raisins can cause severe liver damage and kidney failure. Though the active ingredient that causes the toxin is unknown, even small amounts can result in lethargy, shivers, and decreased appetite.
