Plastic Surgery for Scar Revision
Plastic surgeries are performed both for cosmetic purposes and for medical reasons. Among the many cosmetic purposes for which people choose to have cosmetic surgery, correcting scars is one. Scar revision surgeries can help people correct those minor imperfections left behind due to injuries and other causes. This can boost their confidence and enhance their natural beauty.
1. Remember that there are different types of scars
The type of scar and size determines the type of plastic surgery routine the surgeon plans. For people with thick scar tissue, the growth might be unmanageable. These scar tissues are often painful, especially when they develop in the neck and close to skin folds. Such scars are called keloids. Raised appearance in the case of hypertrophic scars can also be corrected with the help of corrective plastic surgeries. Major scars are the kind that develops after a severe injury or even after burns, and these are called contractures. The first stage in any scar correction would be an assessment of the scar. The depth of scar tissues and the extent of growth are analyzed.
2. Numbing the area
Anesthesia is the first step in the actual surgery, like most other invasive treatments. Sedation or general anesthesia might be given based on the intensity of the surgery or the growth of the scar tissues.
3. External removal of the scar tissues
If the scar tissue adheres to the healthy tissues, so that simple topical and injectable treatments do not work, incisions might be made to remove the tissues. The incision would be small in this case, and the scar left behind by this incision is often barely noticeable compared to the large scar being removed. If it is a smaller one, microdermabrasion methods might be used. Sometimes even a chemical peel is used to remove the outer layer of dead scar cells. A bleach solution might finally be applied to correct the skin color.
4. Skin grafts might be required
There could be skin grafts used in some cases to make sure that the plastic surgery performed to correct the scar does not leave any visible mark on the skin. These are done by extracting tissues from some other part of the body so that the corrected area regrows healthy skin cells. The results, therefore, look natural.
With the advancements in plastic surgeries, it is possible today to correct all sorts of imperfections. All it takes is to do some research to understand the options you have. Then find the right surgeon with good experience in the field and choose the suitable plastic surgery to correct your scars.
